Words are Appetizers, Experiences are the Main Course

Updated: Dec 13, 2025

Words don't teach, experience does.

We don't have the understanding of it until we have the experience of it.

It got me thinking...

In a world drowning in a sea of words, can we truly claim to know something without firsthand experience? Perceiving the world through the words of others lacks true understanding, like describing the taste of chocolate to someone who's never had a sweet tooth. Words can paint a picture, but it's the experience that adds vibrant colours, textures, and emotions, making it real.

Psychological studies reveal the profound impact of experiential learning on memory retention and understanding. Actively engaging in an experience forms stronger neural connections, leading to effective learning and deeper comprehension. Our physical experiences shape our thoughts and understanding through "embodied cognition." The sensations we feel influence our cognitive processes, even making us perceive others differently.

Our society's obsession with accumulating knowledge blinds us to the magic of discovery. Words offer a starting point, glimpses into the tapestry of human experiences, guiding us toward true understanding. But it is through walking the path, stumbling, and rising again that we truly grow.

Love, with its countless books, poems, and songs, cannot be fully captured by words alone. Love must be felt, experienced, and endured to be truly understood. It's the stolen glances, shattered hearts, and warm embraces that teach us its true meaning. And failure, often overlooked, is the most potent teacher. Success stories, motivational speeches, and quotes can't match the value of tasting failure firsthand. It shapes our character and offers invaluable lessons.

But here's the twist: words do have their place. They're like stylish accessories, helping us make sense of experiences, articulate feelings, and share stories. Language is the glue that holds our experiences together, allowing us to connect, empathize, and learn from one another. Through experiences, we come alive, painting the canvas of our lives with understanding and wisdom.

So put down your books, step away from the screen, and go out into the world. Embrace the unknown because it's not what we know that defines us, but what we have lived.
